The Worst Performing S&P 500 Stocks This Year Have Already Lost Half Their Value

While the S&P 500 hit historic highs this year, 2025 has also been a year of turbulence. The S&P 500 is more concentrated than ever, with just 10 companies accounting for about 40% of the index. Just a handful of mega-cap stocks are dictating the direction of the broader market to an increasingly greater degree, driven by increasing demand for software and AI.

In an environment of high uncertainty and disruption, many large companies have suffered devastating losses in market value. Rising medical costs, regulatory uncertainty, and changes to reimbursement structures have hurt many healthcare giants, while consumer staples like General Mills and Conagra Brands have struggled amid slowing demand and higher input costs. Retailers like Target and lululemon have been dragged down by weakening consumer spending and inventory challenges.

Meanwhile, software and IT firms like Salesforce, Gartner, and EPAM Systems saw declines as enterprise spending cooled. Renewable energy companies like Enphase Energy also took a hit, as the Trump administration moved to halt subsidies for green energy.

As of early July, eight S&P 500 companies have posted losses of more than 30% on the stock market. One stock fell by nearly 50%. A closer look at the data reveals the worst performing S&P 500 stocks so far this year.

To determine the S&P 500 stocks with the worst year-to-date returns in 2025, My Investing News reviewed data on daily closing prices from Yahoo Finance. Companies were ranked based on percentage change in closing price from January 1, 2025 to July 9, 2025.
