The Cities With The Most Money Pouring In From Green Investments

[keypoints]

In the United States, buildings account for approximately one-third of all greenhouse emissions. There is big money in shrinking these, with certifications and investments to back the issue. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification program is one way to direct more funds and attention to this issue. This program scores buildings on metrics such as energy use, water efficiency, and indoor air quality, awarding certification to structures that meet high standards.

Developers have adopted LEED-aligned practices and investments to varying degrees, leading to clusters of modern, visually distinctive green buildings in cities and towns around the world. While new certifications have dwindled on a global level since their peak a few years ago, some cities are ramping up green investment at a rapid pace. A closer look at LEED certification data reveals the cities building the most new green buildings.

To determine the cities with the most money pouring in from green investments, My Investing News reviewed data on LEED buildings from the U.S. Green Building Council. Cities were ranked based on the average annual increase in new LEED building registrations from 2000 to 2025. Supplemental data on population are from the U.S. Census Bureau.
